A figure crept silently, taking cover within the dark places behind the trees and cars. It moved with a smooth fluent motion creeping ever closer to a large three story home. It weaved between obstacles, appearing to be nothing more than a harmless shadow, but this shadowy form was far from harmless.

When Thunder Clashes by Kimberly Wearing

With the car now plummeting, Havva was suddenly released from her invisible chains. Each millisecond seemed to stretch out like a minute, allowing her the necessary time to unlock the seat belt, pull the door handle and leap from the car.

Life As She Knew It by Leigh Clements

Paul, walking about ten feet ahead of Bill, moved ahead. Suddenly he stepped on a snow-topped crevice and disappeared into the dark chasm. Bill was violently jerked, then dragged amid a swirl of snow dust, to within a few feet of the yawning gap.

Decision Before Dawn by Dorothy Rogers

An anguished wail escaped Connor’s lips. Surely nothing could survive such a wave. The island vanished before his eyes, and yet the wave kept coming. The massive tidal wave did not even slow as it closed on them. Without pausing, Connor scooped up his kicking and crying son, and ran at breakneck speed back through the forest.
Kalen’s Sword by Jeremy J. Fry

‘I wonder why her face shows up so much in the dark when it’s so lifeless in the light. Maybe I should ask the Mounties in Fords Creek to look after her. Somebody should. She needs help. Maybe a doctor.’
The Girl in the Black Raincoat by Mary E. Robinson

I usually pass over anthologies of short stories -- but I found this book to be a delightful collection of good reads. Each story is its own complete and unique gem. While the preface states that these are stories by "up-and-coming authors", the quality of writing is in no way sophomoric. This is the perfect commuter companion. I look forward to Volume III.
